"What is the Podcast Extended Availability Trial?"

The BBC carried out a trial from October 2009 to December 2009 to assess the impact and value of making podcast episodes available beyond 7 days.

A range of 30 BBC podcasts series were chosen to represent the portfolio.

Over that three month period episodes associated with the podcasts taking part in the trial were not deleted.

At the end of the trial these podcasts reverted to the normal seven-day window of availability, and the episodes which had accumulated over the three months were deleted from the BBC download servers. If you had downloaded any of these during the trial they are yours to keep forever, if you so wish.

The findings of the trial were assessed in 2010 and from September of that year we were able to offer podcasts episodes for longer than seven days, where appropriate.
