In February 2011, BBC Four's Service Licence was amended to allow it to curate and publish archive content permanently online. The BBC Four Collections website features some of the best archive programmes for free online access by anyone in the UK.
From its beginning, BBC Four has always been a gateway to the archive, and the Collections are designed to extend this commitment by creating a lasting online legacy for future audiences to explore and enjoy. As the BBC archive is so vast, a major factor that has to be taken into consideration when we decide what to release is what rights we own - not every programme belongs to the BBC in its entirety for all time. Find out more about accessing BBC online services from outside the UK via the Terms of Use of BBC Online services page.
You can read more about this process in the About the BBC blog site, in a blog post by the BBC's Director of Archive Content, Roly Keating on and the Army: A Very British Institution programme page.
