BBC Help

I have a DAB radio. I think I'm in a predicted coverage area so why do I get no reception?

You can find out if your area is covered by DAB at Get Digital Radio. If it is covered, you will see a list of stations that you are very likely or fairly likely to receive.

With a new DAB radio, the autotune process will find and store all the stations available. If the display screen says 'No stations available', try changing the location of the radio and fully extending the aerial and then retuning.

  • Location: signal strength can be reduced in very built-up areas, in basements, and inside buildings with walls of materials such as thick stone or reinforced concrete. Placing the radio near a window can help, and reception may be better upstairs than downstairs. Once the radio has tuned to the stations available, the signal strength displayed on the radio's screen can help you find the best position.
  • Aerial: make sure the radio's aerial is fully extended. If you still can't get good reception, you may need an external aerial, either indoors (e.g. in the loft) or outdoors on the roof or high up on the building. For an outdoor aerial, you can go to the CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries) or Registered Digital Installers sites to find a registered installer in your area.
